Speak Book Review

Everyone should read this book, its not great, but its not bad either. Laurie Halls Anderson's Speak was a very interesting and dramatic novel. The characters, setting, and the plot weren't that great to be honest, but I enjoyed reading the book.
First off, the characters in this novel were interesting. Melinda, the protagonist, is a loner. She really has no friends since the incident during the party when she called the police. She hides in her closet at school to get away from people because nobody wants to be her friend anymore, not even her old friends. Andy Evans is a creepy character. He was the one who raped Melinda at the party when she was drunk and didn't know what was happening. He is a jock and he is going out with Rachelle, who thinks he is just the best, but she doesn't know the truth about him. Mr. Freeman could be the coolest character. He helps Melinda through her school life. He trears her like anyone else in his classes. Mr. Freeman is just an awesome guy.
Next, the setting was in a school just like any other, but a little less realistic. Melinda goes to Merryweather High School, home of the Wombats. The setting didn't change that much throughout the novel because Melinda just usually goes to school and goes straight home. Sometimes she stays in her closet at school though.
Lastly, the plot was caught my attention. Melinda starts out in the novel as a loner, she has no friends, nobody. She meets Heather, who becomes her friend unintentionally because she was new to the school. Heather later joins the Martha's who do as much as they can to help other people, but just really use Heather to do everything. So Heather leaves Melinda and now Melinda has no friends. She gets some help from Ivy later on and finally has the courage to talk to Rachelle about what happened at the party when Andy raped her. Melinda broke through and could finally confront people and stopped hanging out in her closet. What happened next, you will have to read the book yourself.
To sum it up, Speak enthralled me with his interesting characters, setting, and the great plot. I would recommend this book to anyone who has had this happen them in their lives or knows anyone like Melinda in their life.

Copper Sun

Slavery was very harsh and cruel back in the days. Sharon M. Draper's Copper Sun inspired me with its intense storyline and unexpected ending. The theme, setting, and along with the characters make this book a good read.
First off, the theme of the book was really interesting to me. I think it means that even if all odds are against you, never, ever give up. Amari, one of the protagonists of the story is a girl taken away from her home in Africa to be a slave. Although she goes through a lot, she never gave up hope and did not just die when life got hard on her. Polly, the other protagonist is a white indentured servant because of her parents. They died when she was a child so she has to work off their indentures for them. She is like Amari, in a sense, because she works with Amari and goes through hardships with her, but together, they never give up.
Next, the setting helps you understand more about this book. It starts off in Africa where Amari was kidnapped and taken to the Americas to be slaves. She then has to go to work for Mr. Derby with Polly. Amari meets other people like "Tidbit" and "Tennie" who help them through their hard times as a slave.
Last, the characters in the book make this book a fantastic read. Amari was a very interesting character. She was a black slave from Africa. Her parents and brother were all killed during a raid on her village by the white people. Polly was also very intriguing. She is a white indentured servant. Her parents died when she was young as I said earlier and she has to work off their debt. Polly was a really helpful to Amari when they ran away together and was very supporting and helpful.
In conclusion, I really enjoyed this book and would recommend Copper Sun to young adult fiction readers who enjoy reading books about history.

Hunger Games

Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games enthralled me with its constant action and unique plot. Theme, characters, and the plot are very important in this great book.
First off, one thing in the book is even if you have a difficult life- whether its family problems, poverty, or any other difficulties, never give up. As the cliche says "If life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Katniss, the main protagonist, has a very rough life, yet she struggles on every day of her life since her father died to bring food to her mother and sister.
Next, the characters were really quite interesting. Katniss was the protagonist of the story. She took her sister's place in the Hunger Games when her little sister's name was called out. She is very brave and smart. Although Katniss isn't as strong as the other career tributes, she manages to survive for a very long time in the games.
Finally, the plot to me, was very interesting and exciting. It starts off telling about Katniss and her friend, Gale's life before she volunteered in her 12-year old sister's place to be in the dangerous and deadly Hunger Games. The boy tribute for District 12 was Peeta, the boy who helped Katniss out when she was very young and during the games to survive as long as they could. In the Hunger Games, 24 tributes fight to the death to survive, but only one person will be named champion and brought home to their district as the victor. There were many grueling deaths and some close calls, but Katniss and Peeta survive until the top ten survives were left. With ten tributes left, will Katniss and Peeta survive? Read Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games to find out.
In summary, I recommend this book to young adults who enjoy action/adventure books.
